What It Is
A USDOT number is issued by FMCSA and required for any commercial motor vehicle involved in interstate commerce that meets weight, passenger, or hazmat thresholds.
The number stays with the company for the life of the operation and anchors every other federal filing — MC Authority, IFTA, IRP, and Clearinghouse enrollment are all tied back to it.
Registration requires accurate classification of operation type (for-hire vs. private), cargo classification, and vehicle/driver counts, which determines downstream filing obligations.
