Questions
Form 2290: common questions
When is Form 2290 due?
The tax period runs July 1 through June 30, and the return is due by August 31 for vehicles in use in July. A vehicle first used later in the period is due by the last day of the month after the month of first use.
How fast do I get the stamped Schedule 1?
E-filed returns are usually acknowledged by the IRS the same day. The stamped Schedule 1 is issued on acceptance, not on submission, so a return the IRS rejects has to be corrected and resubmitted before you get one.
What if my truck runs under 5,000 miles?
A vehicle expected to run 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) is reported as suspended. You still file. You just do not pay the tax unless the mileage is later exceeded.
